Do Not Resist? 100 Years of Chicago Police Violence was a community-based, artist-led, visual project and exhibition, curated by a team of artists within For the People Artists Collective.
The exhibition allowed audience members to engage with Chicago’s history of police violence in order to better understand what led to our present circumstances. The exhibition invited viewers to imagine a future without policing, and served as a space for the general public to envision new structures for community safety that are not reliant on police and prisons. The exhibition took place in 4 locations, including Hairpin Arts Center (Logan Square), Art In These Times (Logan Square), Uri-Eichen Gallery (Pilsen), and Roman Susan Gallery (Rogers Park). 43 artists from 25 different Chicago neighborhoods contributed works ranging from installations, stained glass, paintings, screen prints, video, and audio. The exhibition was paired with teach-ins, workshops, performances, and panels on the topics of policing, challenging state violence, exploring abolition, and community healing. |

The Do Not Resist? MixtapeRelease date:
8 February 2018 This mixtape is part teach-in, part love, and part struggle--captured in song, chants, protests, and interviews. Many of the tracks were generously contributed by some of Chicago’s most talented artists, many who have been and continue to be directly impacted personally by police violence. We also included clips from marches and other forms of protest that are exemplary of the fierce resistance to police violence in Chicago; these are part of movement history now, and we shouldn’t forget. Woven throughout the mixtape are clips from two interviews with Mariame Kaba on policing and abolition. Who better to provide the teach-in portion of the mixtape than Mariame, who was such an inspiration for this exhibit, not to mention a teacher and co-struggler for so many of us who are abolitionists? - Do Not Resist? Curators Monica Trinidad, Danbee Kim, Ruby Pinto, Sarah-Ji, and Serena Hodges |
